The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
