Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
