Similar to the recent storm tore through the northwest the prior day, City blew the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.
Back-to-Back Defeats for United
This result represented consecutive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.
Unitedโs ability to balance domestic and continental soccer with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.
Team Changes
Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a several changes. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.
Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer loading worries. Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.
Overpowering Start
The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose energetic attack played with and tore United open with a superb initial 45 minutes performance that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

Initial Opportunities

Goals Galore

They increased their advantage with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was permitted to drive through the midfield from central defence, the field opened up for City. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in possession saw Hemp given the room to drive a attempt home from distance.
Second Half
The primary change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on goal.
The home side, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any team who ended above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable position after nine games.
