Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
