Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
