Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
