Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
